Who is the Global Methodist Church?
“The Global Methodist Church (GMC) was created after a schism from the United Methodist Church (UMC) due to a foundational disagreement over the importance of the authority of scripture in today's church. This disagreement was reflected in several key areas in the life of the church including but not limited to:
Same-sex marriage/Human Sexuality - The GMC opposes same-sex marriage and the ordination of practicing gay clergy. Despite the vote of the majority of the church to maintain the plainly stated traditional biblical standard, some UMC authorities allowed some clergy and bishops to violate its own doctrine by promoting LGBTQ+ persons in clergy and officiate same-sex unions. The GMC maintains the Methodist church's traditional biblical stance that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.
Accountability - The GMC aims to increase accountability for clergy and bishops to ensure they adhere to the church's teachings and practices.
Bishops - In the UMC, Bishops are elected for life, while in the GMC they have term limits. Additionally, the scope of responsibility for Bishops in the GMC is focused on doctrine & teaching. The administrative tasks necessary for maintaining order within the church have been charged to the Annual Conference Presidents. In the UMC, Bishops are required to serve both functions.
Pastoral ordination - The GMC has several paths to serve as clergy and all paths are honored equally. Not every path requires a seminary degree.
The Global Methodist Church observes the sacraments of water baptism and communion, and affirms the Apostle’s Creed, which states:
"I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen."
